The special themed sets of the late 1960’s are some of the hardest to find, and some of the most exciting to play with! In addition to some new parts, some of these sets featured a foldout cardboard background play scene. But one thing that was missing was the plastic heads. Even though earlier sets contained the new plastic heads, this and several sets in the late 60’s were designed to be used with real fruit.
The circus set featured parts to make a strong man, clown, seal, ringmaster and elephant. The masquerade set included colorful costumes, feathers, wild feet, and even a pirate peg leg!
These playsets must have been easy for Hasbro to assemble. If you look closely, you’ll see that many of the same custom parts were utilized in the different sets. The flippers for the circus seal were also the horns for the farm cow and the fins for the space rocket. The wheels were in the parade set & the western set. The circus strongman’s feet were also the witches feet. The farmers hat was the same as the cowbay hat, and the wild west girl's bonnet was the scoop on the train! These sets were also sold in Canada, so they can sometimes be found with French and English writing.

The festive 1968 Mr. Potato Head in the Parade set brought home the excitement of a small town marching band! It included majorette and band costumes, and parts to make a parade float! The more down to earth Mr. Potato Head On The Farm set included Mr. & Mrs. farmer outfits, tools, and cow parts!
For other kids, dreaming of working the railroad was more along their liking. The Mr. Potato Head on the Railroad set not only included parts to turn Mr. Potato Head into an engineer, but had wheels and other parts to make a veggie train!

In 1969, Hasbro and Dunkin Donuts released the exclusive Dunkie Donut Head. This very small set comes with a brown styrofoam donut head, but I suppose you could use a real donut if you wanted to. This very rare set was available only from Dunkin Donuts as a premium item.

The strange Holiday set below used real fruit like the sets from 1968. But this box also has an early Romper Room Logo. So this item was probably one of the last Potato Head items to make it to market in the 1960’s. You can see that the goblin in the middle is almost identical to the witch costume in the 1968 Masquarade set. Included in the set is a cardboard foldout with a Holiday decorated Romper Room schoolroom scene.
