As I mentioned at the beginning of this section, anyone involved in the business of entertaining children took notice of the success of Mr. Potato Head. Here are two examples of established characters collaborating with the popular Spud. The 1960’s set Mr. Potato Head and his Pal Donald Duck included an oversized white duck head and all the parts needed to build the audibly challenged quacker. The face parts for the duck and the potato were interchangeable, which allowed for some really strange combinations.
Bozo The Clown was also well known among kids, so he too was a natural choice to go in-league with Mr. Potato Head. And kids that owned these sets must have known that they had something special. Because although they aren’t common, more time than not when they do surface, they can be found nearly complete and in the original box. Both the Bozo and the Donald Duck sets were sold until 1973.

Another sought after item from the 1960s is Hasbro’s Tooty Frooty “The NEW Mr. Potato Head” game. It features Mr. Potato Head, Pete the Pepper, Cooky the Cucumber and Katie Carrot all together. The object was to spin a spinner and assemble your character before your opponents. This “be the first to assemble your Potato Head” style game would be released in many different variations in the next few decades.![]()
