The 2000s

At the beginning of the year 2000, it originally appeared that Hasbro & Playskool were going to continue with the trend from the late 1990’s and down size the amount of actual Mr. Potato Head accessories and sets. But then Mr. Potato Head turned 50 in 2002, and the celebration put Tatortown back on the map!

    Pulling out all the stops, Mr. Head traveled in his "Spudmobile" to  250 birthday parties at Wal-Mart stores all over the country. This 50 Years of Smiles tour includes a $25,000 giveaway and charitable donations to OPERATION SMILE.
    And speaking of charity, the Rhode Island Legislature gave their "peel of approval" in 2002 to a state auto license plate featuring Mr. Potato Head, all to raise money for charity. And a patriotic edition Mr. Potato Head was released to help raise money for the children effected by the Sept. 11th attacks. 


    His gift to collectors in 2002 began with a retro designed 50th anniversary Mr. Potato Head set and collector tin. Then came a new Wal-Mart limited edition series to correspond to each season of the year! There was also a Birthday Party version, a Disney version and even baseball team giveaways. Each limited edition features the same egg shaped hollow body, but panders to collectors with exciting boxes and new parts and accessories! Even some of the older toys have been released in 50th Anniversary boxes. 

    For the year 2005, Mr. Potato Head got Healthy and became the national spokesman for the United States Potato Board. His new healthy incarnation made it's debut as a giant balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.
    Currently, the licensing of his name and face on other toys and cross collectibles is moving with more velocity than a potato from a spudgun...and shows no signs of slowing down.  The most successful licensed products so far are the Sports Spuds. They are smaller team specific versions of Mr. Potato Head from over 100 collegiate and pro teams!
