Mr. Potato Head and Music
 


-In 1982, the techno group DEVO paid homage to Mr. Potato Head with their potato heads album cover.
 
 


-Rock guitarist Mike McCready of the band Pearl Jam pays tribute to Mr. Potato Head every time
he plays. His guitar picks show  a 1970’s Mr. Potato Head on one side and the name McReady
on one side.  During the 1998 tour, Mike would throw a few of these out into the crowd each night, ca. 1998
 

-Pearl Jam and others musicians have recorded their CD's at Galleria Potatohead recording
and arts center in Seattle Washington.
 
 


-The J.Geils Band released a picture disk single in 1981 of their hit song “Freeze  Frame.”
The picture on side A is a bizarre looking face that bears a striking resemblance to Mr. Potato Head!
 
 


-The rock group Smashing Pumpkins had a T-shirt from a few years back that features the band members as Mr.
Potato  Heads! Band members were featured with detachable ears, nose, eyes and Mr. Potato head lips.
Beneath the caricatures of the band is the caption “Smashing Potatoes... smash hit after smash hit.”
 
 


-Paul Whiteman and his orchestra released their albums around the 1930’s on the Columbia label.
Because of the weird face on the label, they are known among record collectors as the “Potato Head” label.
 
 


-Humorist Stephen W. Terrell’s 1981 country comedy album from the Blue Elf Music label is titled
Picnic time for Potatoheads. The cover art (by Ed Leek) shows Stephen with a guitar
sitting across from a huge Mr. Potato Head
 
 


-Although the record isn't related to Mr. Potato Head in any other way, the cover of the 1950s album
Kiddies’ Playtime Songs shows a little girl playing with a couple of Mr. Potato Head toys. Interestingly,
The photo on the album was snapped just seconds after the photo to the right.
It appears in a Mr. Potato Head article in the January 1954 issue of Chevrolet Friends magazine!
 
 


-Kid With Man Head: Mr. Potatoe Head CD.  Title of CD and photo are the only Mr. Potato Head references.
 
 

Other Potato Head Music Facts....
-Joe Satriani 1989 CD Flying in a Blue Dream features his hit song “The Mystical Potatohead Groove Thing”.

-The music group Ookla The Mok released a 1997 song titled “Das Über Tüber, or, the Mystery of Mr. Potato”.

-The Fabulous Potato Heads is a six piece group that plays traditional Irish music with rock and roll influences.

-Mr. Potato Head is the name of a punk rock band from the Netherlands.

-Jazz great Louis Armstrong recorded a song in the 1930’s called “Potato Head Blues”.

-Musician Will Lee’s 1985 CD "Joe Cool Live" has a cut called “Dr. Potato Head!”

-Singer and composer Isaac Hayes lent his voice and famous Shaft theme to Mr. Potato Head for
a series of Burger King Commercials.

-One of the characters that performed in the rhythm group Stomp is named Potato Head.

-The Rap artist 50 Cent has an animated Mr. Potato Head character in his 2005 Piggyback music video.

-The Rap artist Game released a 2005 album titled Ghost Unit. It features a track entitled  Mr. Potato Head, which addresses
50 Cent's Piggy Bank video (above) where Game was ridiculed as a Mr. Potato Head figure wearing a bandana.  Interestingly, at the 2006 Grammy awards that followed, The Game brought his son to the show. His son was carrying Mr. Potato Head parts in his hand!
