Mr. Potato Head Parts Notes

Have you ever wondered what Mr. Potato Head’s hands look like? All his hands since 1983 have gloves! I guess it’s easy to understand why he might be self conscience about his hands. In the early days, his hands were stumpy and stiff. Then in the 1970’s he lost them all together!  Here are some other parts notes that might be helpful to complete sets or identify interesting pieces.

Click HERE to look at parts color variations.

The 1950'S & 60'S
Other than color, here are some of the difference to look for on these parts...

-Glasses-There are 2 styles of glasses  from this era. They appear to be all the same, but close examination reveals that some have a narrow bridge, and other have a wide bridge.

-Shoes-Many of the shoes are marked with L and R. The shoes for Mrs. Potato Head come in 3 different styles and heights.
Also, some are shiny and some have a flat finish. They are much easier to match from the bottom then from the top.

-Eyes-Many of the eyes from the 1950 and 1960 look the same, but if you examine them from the back you will find different posts and back molding.

-Hands-Mostly unchanged. All have 5 fingers. There are various skin tones, and some are yellow or white for specialty sets.

-Mouth-The earliest versions have painted teeth. The backs reveal many different styles of molds and posts.

-Ears- Most are marked L and R, but not all.  Although there are basically only 2 shapes of ears, there are many different styles of molds and posts.

-Nose-The large "indian" nose has 2 different locations of posts.

-Male Body-The oldest versions have side pointing arm holes and no details. The "cowboy" version has bowed legs and side
pointed arm holes. The later "bow tie" versions are all the same, except for the head post. This body has forward pointed
arm holes and a Hasbro logo on back.

-Female Body-The oldest versions have side pointing arm holes and molded details. The later "bow tie" versions are all the same, except for the head post. This body has forward pointed arm holes

The 1970’s
-There is a small variation on the eyes. Most of the blue pupils in the eyes are painted on. The eyes with the off center pupils are slightly raised and the blue is a decal.

-Some of the brown bodies have a date on them, and others don't. There are no dates on any of the removable parts other than the hats and pants from the accessory sets, which are dated 1976.

-The teardrop shaped ears are marked L & R for left and right. All other parts are ambidextrous.

-There are no known color variations for any of the 1970’s parts.

-Some of the boxes for the 1970's toys show Mrs. Potato Head's feather pointing sideways, the cowboys hat as light tan, and the fire chief's ax as red instead of blue. These are obviously early photographs...no actual toy has every been located with these differences.

-The eyes with eyelids are used in the Mr. Potato Head Bucket from the 1980’s and the Toy Story Mr. Potato Head from 1995. However, the brown painted ones are exclusive to the Toy Story Mr. Potato Head.
