-When Vice President Dan Quayle made the mistake
of spelling potato with an “e”, it spawned
all kinds of jokes. Above is a couple of the buttons
that were soon making the rounds.
-Another campaign button featuring Mr. Potato
Head is this year 2000 white 3 1/4"
celluloid button. Although unclear as to it origin,
Mr. Potato Head is saying “Gore-tastic”
and the caption reads “Mr. Potato Head for
Al Gore. “
-In the 1990 California Attorney General race,
candidate Ira Reiner called his baldheaded
opponent “Mr. Potato Head”. The toy was obviously
popular with the voters...Reiner’s opponent won!
-In 1985, there were 4 write in votes for Mr.
Potato Head in an election for mayor in Boise, Idaho!
-Mr. Potato Head joined Surgeon General C. Everet
Coop in 1987 for a huge Great American Smokeout
media blitz. After 35 years, Mr. Potato
Head turned his signature pipe over to Coop and
set an example for others to quite smoking. To
coincide with the event, Hasbro permanently
removed the pipe as a Mr. Potato Head accessory.
-The 1996 League of Women Voters asked Mr. &
Mrs. Potato Head to sponsor their “get out & vote” campaign
-In the 2003 New Jersey senate race, Candidate Jay Webber called State
Senator Robert Martin "Mr. Potato Head,
accusing him for his ability to change his political face to meet the
challenges of a more conservative primary voters.
Another B.C. politician has felt the sting of an e-mail gone wrong.
In a group e-mail to contacts in his Kamloops-North Thompson riding,
former New Democratic Party of Canada candidate Mike Hanson called newly
appointed minister of state for mining, Kevin Krueger, "potato head."
