The 1995 release of Toy Story was a turning point for Mr. Potato Head. He was already an established titan in the toy world and even on TV. But starring in a major motion picture boosted his popularity and brought him to the attention of many people that had forgotten his appeal.

    Suddenly is was cool to be a fan of the spud. More adult targeted items hit the stores after this movie than ever before, all because of a quick witted potato with an attitude. Plus, because the movie was associated with Disney, anything connected with the film became an instant collectible. Add to that the fact that most of the earlier Toy Story toys were sold for a limited time, and it's easy to understand why many of them are hard to find collectibles today.

    But you may recall among the "stars" of the movie, Mr. Potato Head was the only licensed character of the bunch at the time the film was released. (Several licensed toys made appearances, but weren't one of the main characters.) Hasbro and Disney collaborated on some items, but because he was a licensed character, there are many pieces of Toy Story merchandise that strangely exclude Mr. Potato Head. Just go to a local Disney Store and see how many Potato Head items you can find... not much!
